Earthquakes are becoming more and more common. We see the devastation of earthquakes on the news. Even if you do not live in an earthquake-prone area, earthquake preparedness is still important for you and your family.

Take the necessary steps to be prepared for earthquakes. Below is a list of 10 steps you can take to prepare you and your family for earthquakes and ensure emergency survival. Read these steps and then do each step with your family.

1. Learn earthquake info in your area. Know the chances of experiencing an earthquake in your area and how severe it may be.

2. Create an emergency plan. Include home exits, an outside meeting location and emergency contacts.

3. Get an emergency survival kit. Be sure to have enough emergency supplies to last all members of your family for 72 hours.



4. Make your home earthquake-proof. Secure loose household items and keep passageways clear.

5. Conduct an earthquake drill. Make sure all family members understand what to do in case of an earthquake (i.e. do not run outside).

6. Create a chart of everyone’s daily schedule. Know when and where people are during the average day so you can find them easier after an earthquake.

7. Know location of gas and water shut-off valves. Keep shut-off tools next to valves and out of reach of children.

8. Know community earthquake procedures. Each city has emergency response procedures. Know what help you can expect after an earthquake.

9. Store copies of valuable documents remotely. Make sure you have a backup of all important documents so you can focus on keeping your family safe.

10. Know proper first aid procedures. You may have to administer first aid to yourself or others after an earthquake. Get a first aid guide.
